By Our Staff Reporter
Pondicherry Feb. 8. Around 25 huts were gutted in Ellaiamman Nagar on the East Coast Road in the Lawspet Assembly constituency here today. Fire fighting brigades from Pondicherry and D. Nagar rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames. Around Rs. 4 lakhs worth of properties including household articles were lost in the fire. The residents rendered homeless were moved to a nearby school for temporary accommodation. The Education and Revenue Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, accompanied by M.O.H.F. Shah Jahan, local legislator, visited the spot and consoled the homeless people. He also arranged for distribution of cash relief of Rs. 6,000 to each of the fire-ravaged families to enable them to meet part of expenditure for reconstruction of the huts. No casualties were reported. The cause of fire was not known immediately. Mr. Lakshminarayanan told reporters later that the Revenue Department would also arrange to provide clothes to the victims.
