CUDDALORE, FEB. 8 . Parents should not impose their unfulfilled ambitions on children as this can impose a huge strain on them leading to breakdowns, V. Namachivayam, paediatrician, said here today Addressing a Doctors' Day celebrations, organised by the Lions Club of Cuddalore here recently, Dr. Namachivayam said when the annual examinations were approaching children would be preoccupied with studies. It was the time for parents to deal with them carefully and on no account should they compare them with other children. Parents should encourage their children to concentrate on studies, and instil confidence among them. They should learn to appreciate and nurture individuality and respect their aptitude.Children should be taught to take failures in their stride. When children accomplish a task, they should be appreciated, and, for enthusing them, they could be rewarded. During family functions, their opinion could also be sought, as it would give them a sense of belonging and responsibility. He emphasised that the parents should not to quarrel before them, as it would emotionally disturb them. Parents should take at least a meal a day with their children, and give a patient hearing to their activity during the day. Children should be allowed to play for half-an-hour after school. As far as possible, cholesterol-rich food, junk food and soft drinks should be avoided.The club president, C. R. Krishnan, honoured Dr Namachivayam, K. Srikanth, eye specialist, and A. Ravi, acupuncture specialist. The district chairmen, N.S.Ranganthan and K.Thirumalai, spoke.
