Demonstration against FDI in telecom sector

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, FEB. 8. Protesting the Union Government's decision to increase foreign direct investment in telecom sector to 74 per cent, employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited staged a demonstration in front of the Office of General Manager, Vannarpettai, here today.

The protestors said it was the most unfortunate decision taken by the Centre without considering the threat perceptions to the country's integrity while allowing foreign investors to take roots in the Indian telecom sector. Moreover, the Government's argument that FDI in telecom sector would substantially increase use of telephone service could not be accepted as the country had witnessed a massive five-fold increase in the past five years even without any FDI. The public and private telecom operators had achieved this enviable success in the past without any foreign investment and extended their services to rural parts of the country without any external assistance.

Hence, the Centre should immediately withdraw the decision to increase the investment cap to 74 per cent or face the BSNL's combined and intense struggle, they warned.
