LOME (Togo): The main market and other businesses were closed on Tuesday in Togo's capital in a strike called to protest the military's appointment of the late President, Ggnassingbe Eyadema's son as his successor. Opposition also grew abroad, with the African Union threatening sanctions, underlining the eagerness of many on this continent to put the old days of dictatorship behind them and embrace democracy. ``Togo is not a hereditary monarchy, so the army and Parliament have no right to impose the son of President Eyadema on the people,'' Emmanuel Akwetey, a welder, said at his home in Lome, capital of this West African nation of 5.5 million.
