UDUPI, FEB. 8. The Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, said on Tuesday that special security arrangements have been made in the naxal affected areas for gram panchayat elections to be held on February 27.

Mr. Bhatt told presspersons here that filing of nominations will begin on Wednesday. February 16 is the last date for filing of nominations.

The nomination papers will be scrutinised on February 17. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is February 19. The counting of votes will be held in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala on March 1. The election process will be completed by March 3.

Elections are being held to elect 2,323 gram panchayat members. Of these, 1,035 are women.

There are 6.92 lakh voters (3.65 lakh women). There are 61 gram panchayats in Udupi taluk, 53 in Kundapur taluk, and 29 in Karkala taluk.

As many as 143 election officers and 144 assistant election officers have been appointed to supervise the election in these areas.

There will be 809 booths. Of these, 298 booths have been declared sensitive and 57 as very sensitive booths.
