Sharp fall in rupee
MUMBAI,
FEB. 8.
The rupee tumbled to one-week closing low of 43.69/70 a dollar after the recent slide of the currency gathered further momentum due to sustained heavy demand fuelled by a resurgent dollar overseas. In nervous trading at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee declined by a steep 20 paise from Monday's closing level of 43.49/51 and is now a whisker away from 43.70/71 a dollar logged at the close of trade on February 1, a forex dealer said.
The rupee opened distinctly weak at 43.59/61 a dollar, reflecting the persistent surge against major global currencies, mainly the euro. PTI
