Narasimhaiah mourned
BANGALORE

The governing council of the National Education Society of Karnataka has vowed to stand by the ideals of its former president, H. Narasimhaiah, who passed away on January 31. The council held a special meeting recently and placed on record Narasimhaiah's inestimable and unsurpassed services to the National Education Society in particular and to education in general. "The governing council resolves to walk on the tracks trodden by his feet, however difficult it is to follow his footprints," says a press release from the society. "Dr. Narasimhaiah's life, which was a saga of selflessness and sacrifice and whose death marks the end of an era, will continue to guide and inspire generations of students and teachers," the release said. The founder of the People's Education Society (PES) group of institutions, M.R. Doreswamy, and the PES group have mourned the passing away of the educationist. A condolence meeting was held at PES College where tributes were paid to Narasimhaiah, who was a member of the executive committee of the PES Group during 1973-86. He had instituted an endowment prize named after him in the college to be awarded to the student who secures the highest percentage of marks in science, says a press release from the PES group of institutions.
Cancer detection clinic

Preethi Centre for Onclogy will organise a free cancer detection clinic on the centre's premises on Thursday. A release said that those suffering from abnormal bleeding, swelling lumps, hardness, change of voice, difficulty in swallowing, or a sore throat may attend the camp. 20 persons injured
RAICHUR

Twenty persons were injured, one of them seriously, when the tractor in which they were travelling overturned when the driver lost control on the Lingsugur-Raichur Road near Paidoddi village in Lingsugur taluk on Monday.
The Hutti Police have registered a case.

Emigration clearance is not required to visit 54 countries, including the U.S., Australia, France and Germany. The countries for which clearance is not required are Albania, Australia, Austria, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Mexico, Nepal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, the Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Holy See, Vatican City, Turkey, the U.S., the U.K., Yugoslavia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and South Africa, according to a press note issued by the Press Information Bureau here.
Kannada meets in 52 taluks

The Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), B.M. Idinabba, has instructed officials of the Kannada and Culture Department to organise Kannada conventions in 52 border taluks of the State before the end of March to create awareness about Kannada. The KDA held a meeting recently with the Director and other officials of the Kannada and Culture Department and discussed the need for holding conventions in the border areas and outside the State. The funds required to hold the conventions has been released to the Kannada and Culture Department, says a press note from the KDA. The meeting resolved to hold conventions in Kasaragod, Goa, Chintamani, Adoni, Chamarajanagar and Akkalakot. The divisional directors of the Kannada and Culture Department have been instructed to make arrangements to organise the programmes. A decision has also been taken to conduct a large number of conventions in border taluks in the next financial year. Muddumohan, Director, Kannada and Culture Department; A.V. Prasanna, Secretary of the KDA; and Andanur Shoba, Doddarange Gowda, Pradeepkumar Kalkur, Sukanya Maruthi, Srinivasraju, Srinivasmurthy and A.K. Rameshwara, members of the KDA, attended the meeting.
I.S. Shivakumar is Registrar

I.S. Shivakumar has been appointed Registrar of Tumkur University, according to a press release from the university here today. Dr. Shivakumar took charge on Monday, and he will oversee the examination wing of the university, the release stated. Dr. Shivakumar is the Director of the postgraduate centre of the university here. It was ascertained from sources in the university office that he will hold both the posts.
KACH office-bearers elected

Three expelled from Congress

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has expelled Sambaji Patil, former Mayor of Belgaum; Sanjay Satheri, president, Uchagaon Block Congress Committee; and Pramod Patil, party worker, from the primary membership of the party for six years. The action follows the attack on a Congress worker, Haram Bhavikatti, in Belgaum. The KPCC General Secretary H. Abdul Wahab, who announced the expulsion, said the attack on Mr. Bhavikatti followed a press conference addressed by the KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary. Mr. Poojary, who addressed a meeting of party workers of Belgaum district in connection with the elections to the gram panchayats, had left the venue when the attack took place. Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Poojary said the attack on the party worker is outrageous and the party will not tolerate anyone indulging in violence.
`Ex-Minister's school illegal'

Mallikarjun Khuba, Basavakalyan MLA, has alleged that the former Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Patil Attur has been running a private school in a government building without authorisation for the past decade. He told presspersons here today that he has written to the government to vacate Gurulingamma Patil Attur High School from the premises of the government primary school in Yarbag in Basavakalyan taluk. Mr Attur, who is the president of the trust that runs the school, has not obtained any licence from the Government for running his school in the government building. Neither has he paid any rent to the Government in 10 years, Mr. Khuba said. "I have demanded that the rent for the building for that period be collected from Mr. Attur and disciplinary action be initiated against him," Mr Khuba said. He distributed copies of a memorandum submitted to the Government in this connection.
Constable commits suicide

FEB. 8.
A retired police constable committed suicide by jumping into well at Kardyal in Bhalki taluk on Sunday night.
According to the police, Kashinath (60) of Diggi in Aurad taluk had come to Karadyala to attend a marriage. Passers by called the police after his body was found floating in the well.
The Bhalki (Rural) police have registered a case.
`Reinstate workers'
BIDAR
FEB. 8.
The Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (M) has demanded that the 118 safaikaramcharis who were laid off by the Bidar City Municipal Council two years ago be reinstated immediately.
In a memorandum addressed to the Urban Development Minister, S.R. Morey, the convenor of the district unit of the samiti, Baburao Paswan, said that these workers had been appointed on contract basis from 1998 to 2003.
But their contracts were not renewed and many of them are now on the streets. They should not only be reinstated, but also paid arrears for the period they were without jobs.
Mr. Paswan alleged that a few former members of the municipal council had collected money from these workers as security deposit but never returned it. He demanded that the deposits be returned and criminal cases be filed against the council members who had collected the money.
Leadership camp

Youth should take up self-employment rather than look to the Government to give them jobs, the zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer, Antony Mendonca, said here on Monday.
Speaking at a leadership training camp of taluk-level youth organisations, Mr. Mendonca said that studies had shown that training youth in entrepreneurship contributed to the country's economic development. The camp was organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra at Ayaspur in Bidar taluk.
The convenor of the district unit of the Kendra, Govindrao Nayak, said that such camps promote self-respect among the youth. He said that 25 youths are participating in the four-day camp.

Officials warned

The Deputy Commissioner, Gourav Gupta, has warned against laxity in the registration of deaths and births in the district. He was speaking at a meeting of the coordination committee.
He said show-cause notice will be issued to who is found to be lax in issuing birth and death certificates. He told the officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department and the Women and Child Welfare officers at the taluk level to ensure cent percent registration of births. S.T. Korwar, District Statistical Officer, spoke.
HPCL builds bus shelter

The regional office of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. Belgaum, constructed a bus shelter and donated for public use at Rani Channammanagar here recently. The shelter was constructed in association with the Rotary Club of Belgaum. P.T. Kulkarni, Senior Regional Manager of HPCL, announced a grant of Rs. 1 lakh for the construction of an extension building of Maheswari Blind School. The petroleum company will donate an ambulance to the Rotary Club shortly, he said.

Sri Laxmeendratheertha Swamiji of the Kundapur Vyasaraya Mutt has said that devotion should be tempered with the knowledge of the due philosophy and through the study of the Vedas and Upanishads. He was speaking at the conclusion of the "Geetartha Chintane" conducted by Kirtakesari Sant Bhadragiridas as part of the Purandaradasa Aradhana Mahotsava here on Monday. The swamiji said the Bhagavad Gita was one work where the God taught Arjuna on different dimensions of life. Sri Laxmipramoda Tirtha, junior swamiji of the mutt, presided over the programme. Govindarao Navalgund, working president of the Purandarotsava Samiti, welcomed the gathering. N.R. Kulkarni proposed a vote of thanks.
Road blocked

A large number of people on Tuesday staged a "rasta roko" at Unachagi Friends Circle in protest against the neglect of the Sirsi-Yellapur road. The protesters blocked the road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Assistant Commissioner, Noormansur and other officials visited the spot and assured the protesters that roadwork will be taken up soon. V.M. Hegde, Raste Horata Samiti president, and Ganesh Hegde led the protest.
