Surekha's husband acquitted in murder case

By Our Staff Reporter

WARANGAL, FEB. 8. Senior Congress activist and husband of MLA Konda Surekha, Muralidhar, was acquitted in a murder case.

The police had registered cases against Muralidhar and 15 others in connection with the murder of the Telugu Yuvatha district president, K. Pratap Reddy, on April 10, 2002.

As the news of Mr. Muralidhar's acquittal spread, hundreds of Congress party workers made a beeline for his residence at Ramnagar and burst crackers.

He told The Hindu that 17 cases were registered against him during the Chandrababu Naidu regime and alleged that the TDP MLA, Errabelli Dayakar Rao, was behind them. "I have been acquitted in all these cases since I am not guilty. It was TDP leaders who foisted cases on me. My security was withdrawn despite my offer to pay for it. People are with me and they protected me,'' he contended.

Mr. Muralidhar said though a case of murder was registered against Mr. Dayakar Rao, Congress leaders were not pressing for his arrest as they were not interested in harassing political opponents.
