Cabinet discusses strategy for Assembly session

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB. 8. The State Cabinet, which met here on Tuesday, decided to effectively counter the Telugu Desam's expected offensive during the budget session of the Assembly beginning on February 14 by fielding counter-strategy teams.

Final touches to this strategy will be given when the Cabinet meets again informally on Wednesday afternoon to fine tune the Governor's speech, sectoral allocations in the budget and bills proposed to be introduced in the Assembly. The back-and-back meetings have been planned since the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will be leaving for New Delhi on Thursday.

Sources said there was a detailed discussion in the Cabinet after officials left on the political heat that the session would generate. The Chief Minister, who began by explaining the spinoffs of his recent tour to China, turned his attention to the ``attempts of the TDP leadership to gain political mileage out of Paritala Ravindra's murder." He is said to have made light of the TDP campaign in New Delhi as "silly and self-defeating." He reportedly asked the Ministers to coordinate their efforts with the whips and MLAs of the districts of which they were in-charge to counter the TDP's arguments in the House.

Civic polls to be put off?

The Cabinet signalled the likely postponement of the municipal elections to September by directing officials to step up efforts to procure Rs. 1, 360 crores World Bank funds for the AP Urban Reforms and Municipal Services Project before March first week.

A formal decision to this effect would be announced soon after the Budget session. Earlier it was indicated that the elections would be held on time due to the political advantage the ruling party would have then.

The informal meeting of the Cabinet tomorrow would also be used for ensuring greater coordination between the ruling alliance partners, the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), in the session.
