NALGONDA, FEB.8. Sharpening the Communist Party of India's attack on the "neo-liberal" economic polices of the United Progressive Alliance government, the party's secretariat member, D. Raja, has warned of "mobilising people'' against it. Addressing delegates at the State unit's 22nd conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Raja said: "If the UPA deviates from the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) and tries to pursue the same old policies of the National Democratic Alliance Government, the communists will not kept quiet. We will mobilise people and take to the streets.'' He asked the Congress-led Government to understand the new realities. "This is 2005, not 1990. You should understand that the new political situation that has emerged,'' he added.
Lesson for Congress
Mr. Raja asked the Congress to learn a lesson from the electoral debacles of Chandrababu Naidu in Andhra Pradesh and S.M. Krishna in Karnataka. "What is the meaning of the verdict given by people in the 2004 elections? Of course people did not want the communal fascist forces to come back to power. At the same time, people voted against the governments and political parties which pursed neo-liberal economic polices. Otherwise what is the justification for the defeat of Mr. Naidu, who was supposed to be chief executive of the World Bank and the pro-reforms Chief Minister?'' he asked. According to the CPI leader, Indian experience had proved that the neo-liberal economic polices are detrimental to the national interest and economic sovereignty. Referring to the party's reservations over the increased foreign direct investment equity, Mr. Raja said: "We are not blindly opposing the FDIs. If at all we get the FDIs, they should augment our economic prosperity and generate employment.''
"We have to take to the streets against such economic polices. The UPA Government must pay heed to the communists' reservations about such moves and pursue pro-poor polices,'' he added.
