Naxals blast guest house

KARIMNAGAR: Naxalites detonated a forest guest house in Kataram mandal late on Monday night in protest against the encounter of their cadre at Shivaram in Adilabad mandal recently. Reports reaching here said that four naxalites went to the guest house, planted explosives and blew up the building which was completely damaged. The impact was so powerful that local residents woke up on hearing the sound of the blast.

Plea to hold talks with Maoists

NIZAMABAD: Political activists irrespective of party ideologies took part in a hunger strike in front of the Mandal Revenue Office at Velpoor on Tuesday demanding that the Government hold second round of talks with the CPI (Maoist). They wanted immediate stoppage of encounter killings. The Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency member, Vasanth Goud, the Mandal Praja Parishad vice-president, Bhagya, and four sarpanches participated.

Public hearings on power tariff

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has announced dates for public hearings on the tariff proposals made by the Transco and the four distribution companies for 2005-06. The hearing on proposals by the Central Power Distribution Company Ltd will be held on February 28 and March 1 at Ravindra Bharati here from 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. For the Northern Distribution Company at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, on March 2 (10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m). It will be at Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, for the Eastern Distribution Company on March 3 (same timings). For the Southern Distribution Company, the hearing will be at Mahathi Auditorium of TTD, Tirupati, on March 5 and 6.

No cess on seed, says court

HYDERABAD: The High Court on Tuesday said that cess cannot be levied on seeds by agricultural market committees as seed is not an agricultural produce. The verdict was given by Justice L. Narasimha Reddy while disposing of a batch of writ petitions filed by manufacturers of seeds.

Lifer for 2 in rape, murder case

ELURU: The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge, I. Ramesh, on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to Pitta Chinna of Southern Street and Gurajapu Ramabramham from Eastern Street of the town for their involvement in a case of rape and murder of a minor girl. According to the prosecution, the girl, daughter of an autorickshaw driver, was raped and later killed by the duo in a coconut garden, near Ponangi road, here in 1999.

Nodal authority on trafficking

HYDERABAD: The Government is contemplating setting up a Central nodal authority for a focused crackdown on traffickers, according to the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Loveleen Kacker. Delivering a key note address at a workshop on `Economic rehabilitation of trafficked victims of Trafficking Project in India' here on Tuesday, she said that the authority would be created through an amendment to the Prevention of Immoral Traffic Act.

Two farmers commit suicide

SANGAREDDY: Komurayya (35), a farmer from Jabbapur under Gouraram police station limits, committed suicide by consuming pesticide in the early hours of Tuesday. Mounting debts forced him to resort to the extreme step, the police said. Another farmer, Sai Reddy (28) of Bhavanipet village in Machareddy mandal in Nizamabad district committed suicide by hanging himself in his house on Monday night.

Congress suspends councillor

HYDERABAD: Ramesh Chandra Gupta, municipal councillor of Yellandu in Khammam district, has been suspended from the primary membership of the Congress, as directed by the APCC president, K. Keshava Rao. According to a press release here on Tuesday, action against Mr. Gupta had been taken after he disrupted the proceedings of the Nagara Palika convention at Gandhi Bhavan on February 4.

Former MLA Kasani dead

HYDERABAD: Kasani Narayana (72), former MLA of the Jangaon constituency in Warangal district, died here on Tuesday following a heart attack. He is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter. Narayana, a leader of the backward classes, had participated in the Telangana armed struggle. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, expressed grief at the death of Narayana.

Shivraj Patil meets Saibaba

ANANTAPUR: The Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, had a special darshan of Satya Saibaba at Prashanti Nilayam in Puttaparthi on Tuesday. Mr. was accompanied by son, daughter and other family members. He left for Bangalore by road at 5.45 p.m.

JAC to intensify agitation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Employees, Teachers and Workers has decided to intensify agitation demanding withdrawal of enhanced profession tax with retrospective effect from 1997. B.V. Subba Rao, chairman, in a press release here on Tuesday, accused the Government of failing to concede their demands, including payment of 20 per cent interim relief. Grandhalaya samstha chief

HYDERABAD: The Government has appointed Kuchipudi Sambasiva Rao as Chairman of the State Grandhalaya Samstha for a period of two years. The appointment order was issued by the Education Department on Monday. The Government has also appointed 10 women as regional organisers of the People's Action for Women Development and Child Welfare for two years. They are: Sandhya Rani Gummadi (for Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam), Lakshmi Suseela. B (East and West Godavari), Rajya Lakshmi Potharaju (Krishna, Guntur), Bhanusri Nandimandalam (Prakasam, Nellore), Santhamma M.R.V. (Chittoor, Anantapur, Cuddapah), Jayaprada Reddy (Mahabubnagar, Kurnool), Sumathi Mohan Kopuru (Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad, Nalgonda), Uma Devi (Medak, Nizamabad), Sharada Nerella (Adilabad, Karimnagar) and Hari Rama Devi (Warangal, Khammam).

Girijan vikas kendra renamed

HYDERABAD: Girijan Vidya Vikas Kendras (GVVKs) have been renamed into Government Primary Schools, Tribal Welfare, following the issue of GO 12 on January 3. There were 4,317 GVVKs, Manmohan Singh, Commissioner, Tribal Welfare, said in a press release here on Tuesday.

Fall in minimum temperatures

Hyderabad: Minimum temperatures fell in Telangana on Tuesday. Weather was dry in the State for the day. The lowest night temperature of 14 degree Celsius was accounted by Arogyavaram. Dry weather has been forecast for Wednesday.

Workshop on media relations

KURNOOL: The Assistant Director of State Information Centre (SIC), Srinivasulu, has called upon Government agencies to learn to work with the media which acquired great pace because of technological revolution. He was addressing a workshop organised by the Andhra Pradesh Primary Education Programme (APEP) for its resource persons here on Tuesday.

UGC refresher course

TIRUPATI: The 21-day UGC refresher course, conducted at Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, ended on Tuesday.

In his valedictory address, S. Padmanabhan of Sanskrit Department, University of Madras, explained to delegates the finer aspects of pedagogy and the need to update knowledge and constantly hone their teaching skills by attending such camps.

Children film festival

TIRUPATI: The district administration, in association with the Children's Film Society of Andhra Pradesh, will celebrate the children's film festival on February 26 and 27 in Tirupati and on February 28 and March 1 in Chittoor.

According to the Tirupati Film Society, eight theatres in the temple town have been identified for screening films.

I-T strikes it big

CUDDAPAH: The Commissioner of Income Tax, Tirupati, A.R. Reddy, has said the department detected undisclosed income of Rs. 2.19 crores in the district by conducting 13 surveys and collected Rs. 60 lakhs as taxes.

More surveys will be conducted to unearth black money, he said here on Tuesday.

Two die in road mishap

NELLORE: Two persons died when two lorries collided at Chennayapalem in Kavali rural mandal on Monday. The driver of one of the lorries died on the spot while its cleaner succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

In another mishap at Mondidinnepalem village, also in Kavali rural mandal, a toddy-tapper, died on way to hospital after he fell off a tree.

BSNL staff stage protest

ADILABAD: Officials of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) staged a lunch-hour demonstration at the BSNL General Manager's Office here on Tuesday protesting against hike in FDI in the telecom sector.

They raised slogans against the Government's decision. Employees belonging to the Sanchar Nigam Employees' Association and All-India BSNL Executives' Association participated in the demonstration.

2 Internet café organisers held

Sangareddy: The Siddipet police have nabbed two Internet café organisers for allegedly showing nude clippings of a South Indian film actress.

According to the SDPO of Siddipet sub-division, A. Ramanarayana Reddy, the police kept the two Internet cafés under surveillance upon receiving complaints that they have been charging Rs. 100 from students for showing the clipping.

'Chalo Assembly' on February 24

ADILABAD: State Government employees will take out a `Chalo Assembly' rally in Hyderabad on February 24 in support of their demands.

The Adilabad JAC unit chairman, N. Ananth Rao, and the secretary, D. Jeevan, told reporters here on Tuesday that a State-level meeting at Tirupati on February 10 and a regional meeting at Warangal on February 17 would be held as a prelude to the proposed rally.

Prizes distributed

KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar range DIG, A.R. Anuradha, on Tuesday, distributed prizes to the winners of the competitions held exclusively for the mentally challenged and physically challenged persons on the occasion the World Disabled day on December 3 in Ken Crest school in the town.

The school correspondent, Gomathi Prasad, and others were present.
