Goa Speaker issues notice to Rane

By Our Staff Correspondent

PANAJI, FEB. 8. The Goa Speaker, Vishwas Satarkar, has issued notices to the Chief Minister, Pratapsingh Rane, and the Officer on Special Duty to the Governor, Sebastian Zumvu, to show cause why breach of privilege of the House proceedings cannot be initiated against them on two separate petitions.

While Mr. Rane has been given 10-days' time to reply, Mr. Zumvu has been given two days' time.Mr. Satarkar told The Hindu that Damodar Naik, Fatorda MLA, had filed a petition alleging breach of privilege by Mr. Rane. The petitioner said Mr. Rane's behaviour by occupying the Speaker's Chair after the Assembly session was adjourned on February 2 and declaring the result of the vote of confidence was unbecoming.

The Canacona MLA, Vijay Pai Khot, has filed another petition against Mr. Zumvu for issuing a press statement on February 3 accusing the Speaker of "turning the vote of confidence proceedings on February 2 to a complete sham and a mockery of parliamentary democracy."
