THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 8. The Government proposes to relax norms for providing employment to the next of kin of those who die in harness. This is in view of the inordinate delay caused by a series of formalities in effecting their appointment to Government service, according to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy.
Violence against women
As many as 16,480 cases of assault on women were registered last year. There have been 17,190 cases of robbery, 13,247 cases of housebreaking and 1,225 murders, reported in the State in the past one year, the Chief Minister said in the Assembly today. Six former Ministers in the State have been provided police protection, in view of the existing situation and based on Intelligence reports. They are: K. Sudhakaran, T.M. Jacob, Kadavoor Sivadasan, P. Sankaran, M.A. Kuttappan and P.K. Kunhalikutty, the Chief Minister said. In the last four years, 61 policemen had committed suicide and seven policemen were involved in crimes, including rape and sexual assault on women. The Chief Minister denied allegations that shock batons were used on students who were on a course of agitation in Kannur last year. As many as 30,098,011 families have been covered under the Kudumbasree project in the State. There were 1,51,406 neighbourhood groups functioning under the scheme, the House was told.
