THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 8. The Kerala Press Academy will introduce an award for television news photography from next year, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, said here on Tuesday. Announcing the State media awards instituted by the academy, the Chief Minister said the judging committee for television news had recommended the new award as videography contributed significantly to the news story. The news story on child labour reported by Abraham Mathew and broadcast by Kairali television on December 10 last year won the award for television news. (The videography was by Thomas P. John). In the print section, C.K.A. Jabbar, secured the award for general reporting for his series on irregularities in the expenditure of international aid received for AIDS control, published in Madhyamam daily from October 23 to 27 last year. The series on lack of industrial development in the State by D. Vijayamohan, P. Kishore, M.D. Varghese and P.P. Narayanankutty, won the award for developmental reporting. It was published in Malayala Manorama from December 8 to 15. Cartoonist Raju Nair of Deepika won the award for his cartoon `Driving School' about the Congress coming to power at the Centre with the support of the CPI(M). K.A. Shihab of Malayala Manorama bagged the award for photography.
