ITBP to check Maoist influx from Nepal
By Marcus Dam
KOLKATA,
FEB. 8.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is to be deployed along West Bengal's borders with Nepal and Bhutan. This comes in the wake of the recent developments in Nepal and the threat posed by Maoist rebels in that country to both north Bengal and Bhutan.
While there have been reports of attempts by the rebels to sneak into north Bengal even before emergency was declared in Nepal, the threat to Bhutan's security comes mainly from Maoists sheltered in refugee camps in Nepal set up for those expelled from Bhutan more than a decade ago.
Last month, while on a visit to this country, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck of Bhutan had spoken of the security threat to both his country and India by the Maoists in Nepal who, according to him, held sway in nearly 69 districts in that country.
Talks between officials of the ITBP and the West Bengal police were being held to finalise details on where jawans of the former were to be posted, Inspector General of Police, North Bengal, K.C. Meena, told The Hindu from Siliguri today.
