PDP councillor shot dead

By Our Special Correspondent

SRINAGAR, FEB 8. Militants today shot dead a senior leader of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), who was recently elected a member of the Beerwah Municipal Committee. He was tipped to be chairman of the council in the central district of Budgam, where the last phase of polling would be held on Thursday.

Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir, who had opted for voluntary retirement from the Accountant-General's office here, was gunned down after militants abducted him while he was travelling by car to Srinagar from his hometown Beerwah. The District Superintendent of Police, Budgam Ramesh Jalla, told The Hindu that the PDP leader might have got a telephone call from a top militant leader operating in the area. "His family said he received the call at 8.30 a.m. and he immediately left for the place alone in his car," said Mr. Jalla. As the PDP leader reached Mirpur-Chewdara, unknown gunmen shot him.

The ruling PDP represents the Beerwah Assembly segment. No party fielded a candidate for the municipal polls there other than the ruling PDP. All the 13 PDP candidates were declared elected unopposed.

The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and the PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, condemned the killing, describing it as an act of cowardice.
