Ronaldo not to play in friendly against Hong Kong

HONG KONG, FEB. 8. Brazil's coach said on Tuesday he tried his best to get Ronaldo to play his 100th international in a friendly with Hong Kong, but the soccer star's Real Madrid team wouldn't let him go.

Thousands of fans bought tickets for the match on Wednesday after advertisements said Ronaldo would be on the pitch. But his Spanish team said last weekend that he'd stay home and rest from a gruelling travel schedule in recent weeks.

``We tried our best efforts since the very beginning,'' Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said.

Parreira said getting players released was a routine problem with European clubs. They were not obligated to release players for friendlies outside of Europe under international soccer regulations, he said.

The coach showed no hard feelings about Real Madrid's decision.

Brazil is bringing a 21-man line-up that includes top stars Roberto Carlos and 2004 FIFA Player of the Year Ronaldinho.

The Hong Kong side spoke with a fan's awe about the Brazilians. ``I've admired the Brazilian player's technique since I was very little. I'm very happy to face my dream team tomorrow,'' Hong Kong coach Lai Sun-cheung said. — AP
