1,700 CPI(M) cadres held in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM,
FEB. 8.
Nearly 1,700 cadres including some local leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were taken into custody when they resorted to road roko at 18 places in Nagapattinam district today demanding tsunami relief assistance for farmers and agricultural labourers.
Police sources said that all of them were released in the evening.
According to Mr. Marimuthu, district secretary of the CPI(M), farmers and agricultural workers were severely hit by the monsoon rain and floods in October and November last and by the tsunami in December.
Mr. Marimuthu said the Government should pay a monthly package of Rs. 750 and 30 kg of rice to the affected labourers every month besides, a compensation of Rs. 500 an acre to all the farmers.
