By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, FEB. 8. The European Commission has agreed to provide an aid of Rs. 928 crores to Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh under a State partnership programme to develop infrastructure for education, health care and drinking water in the two States. Rajasthan is likely to get a share of Rs. 650 crores in the aid.

At a meeting with the members of a delegation of European Commission here on Monday to discuss various aspects of cooperation with the EC Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje referred to the peculiar natural and geographical conditions of the desert State.

Ms. Raje outlined the innovative development schemes taken up in the State, while pointing out that the public-private partnership had been successfully put into practice in many of them. She said efforts were also on to promote the participation of voluntary organisations in development works.

The EC delegation included five German members of European Parliament, two representatives of Konard Adenauer Foundation of Germany, Advisor, Kulian Amin, and Head of Section, Development Cooperation, Brian O'Neill.

Earlier, Ms. Raje met an eight-member Japanese delegation headed by the Director of Overseas Development Aids, Shikohiko Fuziki, and discussed issues of mutual cooperation. The Chief Minister pointed out that the Japanese experts could play an important role in the State's tourism, energy, drinking water and sanitation sectors.

She said Jaipur had the facility of an international airport and there was an enormous potential for Japanese cooperation in urban development schemes. Mr. Fuziki said a team of Japanese experts and engineers would tour the State shortly to explore areas of mutual cooperation.
