ALAPPUZHA, FEB. 8. A team of senior officials of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank today visited the tsunami-hit Arattupuzha panchayat in the district. The team, which comprised Takkashe Nakasakki from the ADB headquarters, the World Bank economist, S. Vaitheeswaran, the social development expert of the ADB, Madhumita Gupta, and the UNICEF project officer, P. Amuda, visited the relief camps at Sree Kuriyappasseri Devaswom Upper Primary School and Valiyazheekkal Government Higher Secondary School and interacted with the affected people.
To assess damage
They visited the Thottappally spillway, the shutters of which were damaged in the tsunami. The team said they aimed at studying the problems in developing basic infrastructure in the area, the social issues in the tsunami-affected areas and the loss to agriculture and fisheries sectors. The team members said they would decide on the aid to be given to the country after discussions with the Union Government, which would be held soon. It is learnt that they would hold discussions with the State Government tomorrow. The team had visited the tsunami-hit areas in Tamil Nadu last week. It visited the tsunami-hit Alapad panchayat in Kollam yesterday. The team arrived at Kayamkulam tsunami control room this morning and held discussions with the Alappuzha District Collector, K.R. Muraleedharan, and other officials. The Chengannur Sub-Collector, Sanjeev Kaul, and the other high officials in the district accompanied the team.
