Medical college controversy: police to exhume body

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, FEB. 8. The police have decided to exhume the body of an 80-year-old man who was buried at the cemetery of the Sleeba Orthodox Church at Kaviyoor, near Thiruvalla, on June 22, 2004.

The decision to exhume the body was taken following reported claims of sighting of the "same body" by his relatives at an exhibition stall of a medical college in Thiruvalla in January second week.

Case registered

The police have registered a case suo motu on the basis of press reports. The Crime Detachment wing in Pathanamthitta is probing into the case.

The Dy.SP., Abdul Rasheed, told The Hindu that he had taken the widow and daughter-in-law of the deceased to the medical college to identify the body today.

However, the police have received no written complaints from the relatives of the deceased in this regard, except a private complaint filed before the First Class Judicial Magistrate seeking judicial intervention in the matter, Mr. Rasheed said.

He said that the police have already requested the Revenue Divisional Officer in Thiruvalla to initiate steps for the exhumation of the body at an early date. He added that the forensic experts would also present during the exhumation process.

The District Superintendent of Police in Kollam, S. Sreejith, who holds additional charge of Pathanamthitta, visited Thiruvalla to review the case today.

Hospital denies charge

Meanwhile, the private medical college authorities, when contacted, have said that the college has nothing to do with the ongoing controversy. The authorities added that they were in possession of all legal documents relating to the body.
