KOLLAM, FEB. 8. Vayalar Ravi, Congress MP, today said that while the Left had extended support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre, it was also spreading an impression that the UPA Government was not stable. Delivering the presidential address at a function got up here today to observe the 15th death anniversary of the Congress leader, Thoppil Ravi, he said the UPA Government was not a proxy Government of the Left parties. Endorsing the former Chief Minister A.K. Antony's call to the Left to join the UPA Government, he said the UPA Government would remain committed to the Common Minimum Programme. There are corrective forces within the Congress and other UPA constituents to exert pressure on the Government if it deviates from the CMP. Agreeing that some of the financial policies proposed were not in tune with the CMP, he said at the implementation level, the CMP would triumph. Talking on the subject of campus politics, Mr. Ravi said the courts were interfering in the aspect in a bid to curb violence on campuses. He called upon all concerned to shed violence.
Strike by employees
Later, talking to presspersons, he said the proposed strike by a section of State Government employees can only be seen as a routine pre-Assembly election exercise with political interests. He alleged that the CPI(M) was adopting double standards on implementing the Value-Added Tax (VAT) system.
