NIZAMABAD, FEB. 8. The Director General (prisons), M.A. Basith, has said efforts are on to construct new jails and modernise the existing ones at an outlay of Rs.121 crores in the State. The cost of construction will be shared by the Centre and the State Government in 75 and 25 per cent formula. The works were being executed by the Andhra Pradesh Police Housing Corporation, he said while talking to reporters here on Tuesday. Mr. Basith was here to oversee the ongoing district jail construction work in sprawling 66-acre land at Sarangapur. The jail was being built with Rs.10.5 crores, he added. He said the works were going on at a brisk pace and it was expected to be completed in a couple of months. It was being built on the lines of jails built at Ongole, Nellore and Rajahmundry. Mr. Basith said the district jails at Khammam, Srikakulam and Vijayawada were modernised.
