NEW YORK, FEB. 8. An online shop selling undergarments with the images of Hindu gods and religious icons has drawn the ire of the Indian-American community, which has demanded the withdrawal of the women's underclothing. "We have recently come across two sets of products — thongs and boxer shorts with the images of Hindu deities and symbols imprinted on them. The AHAD finds the depiction of universally revered Hindu deities and symbols on the undergarments extremely offensive," said a news release issued by American Hindus Against Defamation (AHAD). The cafepress.com online site has put on display the Shiva Classic Thong, priced at $12.99 with the Hindu God's face. Another one on display is the iGod Shiva Classic Thong. It is priced at $15 and has "Namaste it loud. You e Hindu and you e proud" printed on it. The Om Classic Thong costs $8.99 and says, "Om or rather Aum is a sacred Hindu symbol that represents the absolute." The AHAD, which has in the past campaigned successfully against the misrepresentation of Hindu images and symbols, comprises a number of Hindu associations in North America. Christianity, Buddhism and Sikhism have also been offended by the web site. Late last month, the World Sikh Council (America region) succeeded in its campaign against "offensive and degrading pieces of clothing" that had the Khanda, the Sikh emblem, printed on them. — UNI
