`Youth prefer call centre jobs to joining Army'

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, FEB. 8. Youth are interested in joining the armed forces only in certain pockets of Tamil Nadu, according to Brigadier Jai Kumar, Deputy Director-General (Recruiting), Chennai Recruiting Zone, Fort St. George, Chennai.

Talking to reporters here today, the Brigadier said selection rallies conducted in Vellore, Madurai, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai elicited good response, presumably because a large number of ex-servicemen were living in the areas. Youth turned up in large numbers at selection rallies in Vellore and Madurai. As per the Army estimate, Tamil Nadu had 45.50 per cent of recruitable male population (RMP) (both in the general and technical categories) in the Chennai recruiting zone, comprising Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The vacancy in the technical category was 30 per cent. Youth preferred to take up call centre jobs to joining the armed forces.

Efforts were being taken to motivate youth, conducting camps and seminars in colleges through the National Cadet Crops.

A majority of aspirants failed to clear the final written examination as it was either in Hindi or English.

The Army requested district administrations to help the aspirants in preparing for the examination, he said.
