Shiroor weighbridge ready for traffic

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI, FEB. 8. The Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, said on Tuesday that the construction of weighbridge at Shiroor to check the movement of overloaded iron ore lorries has been completed. The bridge will be thrown open to traffic from Friday under the supervision of the Udupi Consumer Forum.

Mr. Bhatt told presspersons here that the weighbridge has been constructed by the Iron Ore Exporters Association. The association will maintain the bridge as is done at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT).

Two representatives of the Consumers' Forum, one each from the Regional Transport Authority and the police will man this weighbridge. The association will pay the Consumer Forum Rs. 90,000 a month towards the cost of maintenance of the weighbridge and for manning four entry points. No weight checking charges will be collected from lorries belonging to the association. The Consumer Forum will check and regulate the movement of overloaded ore lorries at Shiroor, Tallur, Kallianpur and Karkala.

The Consumer Forum has been regulating the movement of ore-laden lorries for one month. During this period, the movement of overloaded lorries has come down. It has been found that nearly 300 lorries pass through Byndoor on National Highway 17 everyday. The decision to implement the new system of checking lorries from February 11 was taken at a meeting of the representatives of the association and the Consumer Forum on Tuesday.

Pratapchandra Shetty, MLC; K. Raghupati Bhat and Lalaji Mendan, MLAs; M.P. Onkareshwari, Regional Transport Officer; and S. Murugan, Superintendent of Police, were present at the meeting.
