MANGALORE, FEB. 8. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Dakshina Kannada unit will use "lack of governance" in Karnataka in the last eight months as a poll plank in the forthcoming elections to the gram panchayat. K. Monappa Bhandary, district spokesperson of the party, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the State has not seen any development activity after the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition assumed power eight months ago. Instead, leaders on either side have spent time accusing each other. The Janata Dal (Secular), which claims to be a champion of the poor and farmers, has let these sections down, he said. The coalition partners have failed to keep any promise made in their respective manifestos. Mr. Bhandary said the Power Minister, H.D. Revanna, has failed to mitigate the problems of farmers with regard to power supply. Lack of irrigation facilities has forced farmers to resort to agitations. The inability of farmers to get remunerative price for crops has compounded their worries. In Dakshina Kannada district, arecanut is a good example of the situation where farmers have suffered for want of suitable price. The promise of the coalition government to provide rice at a subsidised price of Rs. 3 a kg. has not materialised. Scarcity of drinking water has become a common feature across the State. Mr. Bhandary said the BJP workers and candidates sponsored by the party will place these issues before the voters in the gram panchayat elections. He said the BJP has a strong cadre base in all the Assembly segments in the district. The party has organised training for all its workers. The district-level functionaries of the party will tour the constituencies with the respective party MLAs.
