KOLLUR (UDUPI DISTRICTT), FEB. 8. B.M. Sukumar Shetty, Managing Trustee of the Sri Mookambika Temple, on Tuesday termed all allegations of irregularities in the construction of the 80-kg. golden chariot and lack of fiscal discipline in temple accounts as baseless. Mr. Shetty told presspersons here that the 10.5-foot golden chariot, which is to be offered to the deity in the presence of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Monday, has been made as per agama shastra. He said Rs. 5.26 crores has been spent on the making of the chariot, the accounts for which have been audited. The Government has allowed the temple to draw Rs. 2.5 crores as per the Government Order of September 3, 2004, from the temple's revenues, which has to be repaid by the Governing Board of the temple in three years. The remaining sum has been raised through donations. About 90 per cent of donations were received by way of Demand Drafts while receipts have been given to the remaining amount accepted in the form of cash. All cheques and other financial transactions taking place in the temple require the signatures of the Managing Trustee (Mr. Shetty) and the Executive Officer from the Department of Endowments appointed by the State Government. It is not possible to tamper with any accounts. All financial transactions of the temple are audited. When he took over as the Managing Trustee in 2000, its annual revenue was Rs. 9 crores. The revenue touched Rs. 18 crores this year. About Rs. 15 crores has been spent on development works in the temple. The quantity of gold received by the temple in the last five years is more than what it received in 70 years. Disgruntled persons are making allegations to tarnish the reputation of the temple. Ten enquiries have been conducted on the management of the temple in five years and the present board has come clean in all of them, Mr. Shetty said. Mohanchandra Nambiar, trustee, and Madhava, Executive Officer of the temple, were present.
