SALEM, FEB. 8. Senior police officials from the border districts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka met at Mettur near here todayto evolve a joint plan to prevent infiltration of naxalites from Andhra Pradesh. The meeting, chaired by the Salem Range DIG Tamilselvan, and attended by Superintendents of Police Pon Manickavel (Salem), Rajendran (Dharmapuri) and Ashokumar (Krishnagiri) and senior officials from Karnatakadiscussed the threat of naxals from Andhra Pradesh infiltrating into Tamil Nadu and Karnataka through the jungles, which were once in the control of the Special Task Force and the brigand, Veerappan. Veerappan's death, experts feel, has rendered the forests vulnerable to unlawful activities by the naxals. The police had a tough time flushing out naxals, who tried to gain roots in the adjoining Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts recently. ``The border meetings have become imperative and mandatory to keep the borders and jungles safe,'' said an official. The officials exchanged ``sensitive'' information on notorious outfits and the activists. Dearth of information should not be an impediment to enforcing the law, especially during ground action. When the hunt for Veerappan was on, the officials planned combined operations against naxal intrusions in the forests of Kolathur, Thenkanikottai, Hoganekkal, Anjatty and Bargur of Salem and Dharmapuri districts and in the Karnataka forest.
