Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, FEB. 8. The coming together of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), if it happens, is a welcome development and will be good for the country and the Congress, according to the APCC spokesman, Paladugu Venkata Rao. Talking to newspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Venkata Rao said the CPI and the CPI (M) had been talking about unity for several years and the topic came up for discussion at the CPI State conference that was held recently at Nalgonda. This was an opportune moment for them to unite and focus themselves as the primary champions of Leftist ideology.
Danger from extremists
He warned the two parties of the danger of extremist splinter groups succeeding in their attempt to emerge as the real champions of Leftist ideology. Mr. Venkata Rao said the differences between the CPI and the CPI (M) appeared to be more of a personal nature and not ideological. He hoped they would put aside these differences and re-unite. Mr. Venkata Rao criticised the former Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, for attempting to stall the proceedings of the State Assembly saying, Mr. Naidu was still suffering from the hangover of being in power, continuously, for two terms. The Telugu Desam legislators would fail miserably if they tried to stall the Assembly proceedings in an undemocratic manner, he said. The Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP) an ally of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had a confrontationist attitude wherever the party was in Opposition. They were prone to harassing legislators of the ruling parties instead of playing a responsive role, Mr. Venkata Rao said.
Public wrath
The two parties would incur the wrath of the people who were observing their behaviour in legislative Houses. Attempts by legislators to stall the proceedings and wasting of time in the Houses were being noticed by the public. This came up for discussion in the whips conference that concluded recently.
