Public throng Collectorate to collect new ration cards

MADURAI, FEB.8. A large number of persons, including several women, queued up at the Collectorate here today to obtain new family ration cards.

Some of the women and many office-goers turned up pretty early even before the offices at the Collectorate commenced the chore of distribution of new \ renewed the ration cards, in order to obtain the cards soon and then attend to their work. But this was not to be so. The wait prolonged for hours, as there had been unprecedented crowd to get the new cards.

The crowd continued to swell later in the day and many had to sacrifice their lunch to collect their cards. The officials had a tough time in regulating the crowd and as a result the police had to be brought to ensure none jumped the queue and created confusion for the public or problem to the authorities.

Applicants confused

A section of the crowd lamented that the applicants who sought the family ration cards obtained the same from the distribution centres located at various places in the city in the past. But the present system of bunching up the distribution centres within the Collectorate complex not only created confusion among the applicants but also made it arduous for the officials to issue the cards quickly across the counter.

The administration received a total of 2.5 lakh applications and short-listed 1,92,000. The short-listed applications were forwarded to Chennai for printing and the printed cards were received recently. And with the chore of attaching the slips inside the cards was also over, the authorities began the distribution.

The applicants were asked to produce the acknowledgement slips to obtain the cards. The rejected applicants could meet the supply officials and submit their plea and based on the findings, the cards would be issued to them, an official said.
