Madurai
By Our staff Reporter
MADURAI, FEB.8. The district administration has decided to beautify the Pudhu Mandapam to attract tourists visiting the Temple City. This decision was taken at a District Tourism Council meeting chaired by the Collector, D. Raajendiran, here recently. The meeting resolved to hold dance programmes at regular intervals aimed at improving and sustaining a constant flow of tourists to the Temple City throughout the year, in addition to the annual dance festival held during the Chithirai festival. Following this, a 10-day festival would be held at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple during the Navaratri festival.
`Put up galleries'
The council asked the Madurai Corporation to put up galleries on the North-West Masi Street Junction for foreigners to witness the car festival of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and on the riverbed to watch the entry of Lord Kallazhagar into the Vaigai. Meanwhile, the State Tourism Department sanctioned funds for the hospitality-training programme for taxi and auto drivers, tourist police, staff of the Tirumalai Nayak Palace and a few other groups, who interact with tourists frequently in the Temple City.
Peacock sanctuary
The district administration in association with the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and the Tourism department decided to develop a peacock sanctuary near the Tirupparankundram hill to protect the birds, which are being attacked by stray dogs and miscreants. The Tourism department sought the Corporation's assistance to install signboards at 25 prominent places in the city. The council reviewed the arrangements for the 20-day dance festival at the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple, according to official sources. As part of the dance festival, the Tourism department would organise an exhibition at the Tirumalai Nayak Palace. Mr. Raajendiran would inaugurate the festival tomorrow.
