Temperature

MADURAI, FEB.8. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 32.6 degree Celsius and a minimum of 20.5 degree Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam today stood at 111.7 feet with an inflow of 211 cusecs and a discharge of 400 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 22.54 feet with an inflow of 108 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 1215 mcft.

Woman murdered

A woman was murdered by her husband at Kappalur near here today.

According to the police, N. Pitchaipandi (28), a weaver, hacked his wife, P. Nagajothi (26), to death, owing to family dispute. The victim died on the spot. The accused was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The Tirumangalam (town) police have registered a case.

Demonstration

Members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union staged a demonstration in front of the railway station here on Monday, demanding restoration of 12 per cent rate of interest to the provident fund.

Led by the SRMU divisional secretary, R. Kesavan, the agitators demanded the constitution of the Sixth Pay Commission for Central Government employees and interim relief payment till then. They also laid an emphasis on lifting of ban on recruitment and appealed to the railways to desist from surrendering surplus posts.

Grievance

day meet

The Superintending Engineer, Madurai Electricity Distribution Circle, will conduct a grievance day meet for consumers of the Madurai East Division at the Office of the Assistant Executive Engineer, South, Melur at 11 a.m. on February 10.
