VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 8. In spite of the gastronomical delights offered by fish, any unruly atmosphere is referred to as a fish market. How does it feel to have a fish market in the midst of a residential locality? Those living in Ashoknagar area of Asilmetta have a first hand experience of it, every Sunday. The area turns into a fish market, literally every Sunday, as several vendors start coming to set up shop right from Saturday night. The street is busy with the vendors shouting and jostling for space. Buyers throng the road in large numbers. They park their vehicles obstructing passage to the residents. Needless to say, the aftermath leaves the road with unhygienic conditions with scales of fish and the flies they attract.
No response
Residents of the area have been repeatedly representing the issue for the past two years to the civic authorities, including the present Municipal Commissioner. In August last, another reminder was sent for which a receipt was received, but there was no response. One of the residents met the Municipal Commissioner twice and narrated the woes of the residents. The Mayor, the Additional Commissioner and the Health Officer were also apprised of the unhygienic conditions created, including the clogging of drains.
Petty thefts
There is another dimension to this problem. The residents have also to contend with petty thefts. A few weeks ago a police complaint was lodged, leading to the fining of some vendors. The residents alleged that those carrying out the business have no licence. The authorities concerned say that they have no knowledge about the sale of fish in the area. A suggestion is that the market should be shifted to the cellar of a municipal shopping complex on Rama Talkies Road. One only wishes hygiene and the troubles of residents living in the area are taken into view while dealing with the issue.
