KOCHI, FEB. 8. Rehabilitation work in tsunami-affected areas in the district is progressing according to schedule, said the District Collector, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, today. He said the construction of 81 houses in Elankunnappuzha panchayat limits, sponsored by the Varapuzha Archdiocese, began on Tuesday, in the presence of the Archbishop Daniel Acharuparmbil. Ten houses being constructed at Maya Bazaar at Edavanakkad were expected to be completed before February 28. Work on houses sponsored by the Amritanandamayi Mutt and CASA, a non-governmental organisation supported by the Church, would start soon. Mr. Hanish said land would be bought for building houses for those who had lost their dwellings to the sea in Chellanam, Njarakkal and Kuzhippilly panchayat limits. Houses could not be rebuilt in sites where the dwellings stood before being washed away because of proximity to the sea. A list of fishermen whose boats and nets were damaged or lost in the catastrophe had been compiled. It was being scrutinised, he added.
