NEDUMBASSERY, FEB. 8. A building for offices of airlines at the international airport here will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, on Sunday. The two-storey building, with a built-up area of 20,000 sq. ft., was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.15 crore. The ground floor houses engineering section and storerooms of airlines, while administrative offices will function on the first floor. There is provision for building another floor when there is demand of more office space in future. At a press conference today, V.J. Kurian, managing director of Cochin International Airport Ltd., said lack of space for storing spares at the airport was a major complaint raised by airlines. Now, many airlines kept spares in the aircraft itself. The problem would be resolved with the opening of the building.
Direct access
The ground floor would have direct access to the apron, a provision made on request by the airlines. Personnel in the engineering section would have to get in through security gates, with the sole entrance of the ground floor opening to the apron.
AI office
A sizeable portion of the building will be occupied by Air-India. People will have easier access to the administrative offices of airlines. Now, with the airline offices functioning inside the international terminal, entry pass has to be taken to get to these offices for making enquiries. The Minister for Sports and Fisheries, Dominic Presentation, will preside over the inaugural function. The Minister for Industries, V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, will be chief guest. Lonappan Nambadan, MP, will be guest of honour. The MLAs K. Sankaranarayanan, K.V. Thomas, K. Mohammed Ali, P.J. Joy and M.A. Chandrasekharan will be present. M.A. Yousuf Ali, director of the airport company and recipient of this year's Pravasi Bharat Samman, will be felicitated.
