International Congress on psychiatry

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, FEB. 8. There are more qualified psychiatrists of Indian origin practicing in the U.S. than in India.

There may be 3,500 psychiatrists in India, mostly concentrated in the metros and hardly any in the small towns or rural areas.

The U.S. has over 17,000 psychiatrists, and nearly 5,000 of them are of Indian origin, going by professional directories.

General practitioners can be trained to deal with psychiatric disorders but the subject has not been considered essential for passing MBBS, according to Shoba Srinath, Head of the Psychiatry Department, NIMHANS.

This means many common types of mental illnesses may go unnoticed.

The stigma attached to mental illness prevents people from seeking treatment.

It is against this background that the Department of Psychiatry will conduct an International Congress on "Psychiatry in the new millennium: challenges to the global community" at NIMHANS from Thursday to Saturday as part of the institute's golden jubilee celebrations.

Sessions

The three-day event will include deliberations on various aspects of psychiatry, including history, neurobiology, epidemiology, service delivery, training, policy, care for elders and children, pharmacology, psychosocial therapies and management of disasters.

Lectures

There will be guest lectures by invited speakers, some from overseas, plenary sessions, symposia, panel discussions and poster sessions.

Disorders

The World Health Organisations has listed several neuro-psychiatric disorders among major health problems.

In India, about 10 per cent of the population may have some form of mental illness and one per cent to two per cent, grave disorders.

Many patients were unable to get appropriate treatment till recently.

Role of NIMHANS

NIMHANS has been instrumental in getting a national mental health policy framed and works with the Union Government in setting up district centres for mental health across the country.

A WHO-funded programme in Bellary was the forerunner and this year, about 100 district centres are being set up.
