Partly cloudy day ahead

NEW DELHI FEB. 8. The weatherman has forecast a partly cloudy sky with possibility of thundery development in some areas for the Capital on Wednesday. The morning will begin with mist or shallow fog. The minimum temperature is likely to be around 12 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and the minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Tuesday were 24.0 and 13.0 degrees Celsius, while at Palam the maximum and the minimum temperatures stood at 23.0 and 13.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The Capital also received a rainfall of 30.1 mm at Safdarjung and 23 mm at Palam.

The maximum humidity recorded at Safdarjung and Palam was 96 and 100 per cent, while the minimum stood at 60 and 68 per cent respectively.

Auto-lifters held

NEW DELHI FEB. 8. Two alleged auto-lifters have been arrested at Darya Ganj in Central Delhi. Police claim to have recovered a stolen Maruti car and three motorcycles at their instance.

The accused, Pramod and Devinder, were arrested near Golcha Cinema when they were moving on an allegedly stolen motorcycle. During interrogation, they are said to have confessed to their involvement in auto-lifting cases in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Further probe into their other suspected involvements is on.

Held for stealing purses

NEW DELHI FEB. 8. Seven women, who were allegedly involved in stealing purses in market places and railway stations, were arrested when they were fleeing after stealing Rs. 25,000 from the purse of a woman at Lahori Gate in Central Delhi on Monday.

The police said all the accused are from Nagpur in Maharashtra. They live in jhuggi clusters located near railway stations. Efforts are on to nab their other accomplices.

Undertrial attacks inmates

New Delhi Feb 8. A Tihar Jail undertrial today allegedly attacked six other prisoners with a surgical blade in the jail van which was to take them to the courts today, police said. Dalip Kumar Gupta (21), accused in a murder case of Gokulpuri area of the city and currently housed in Jail no. 2 of the prison complex, attacked other undertrials in the jail van at 7-30 am today, police said. Gupta wounded himself also in the process, police said.

Jailed for graft

New Delhi Feb 8. A Delhi court today sentenced a government servant to an imprisonment of one year for taking Rs 5,000 from a person for using his influence to get eviction of some jhuggis in the Hazrat Nizammuddin basti about 14 years ago.

Special CBI Judge Dinesh Dayal also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on S.M.K. Subhani who was then posted as Officer on Special Duty with the Pension Grievances Cell of the Ministry of Defence.

Subhani had been charged with taking Rs 5,000 on April 19, 1991 from Mohammad Salim for using his influence to get eviction.

Passport racket busted

New Delhi Feb 8. The CBI has cracked a racket involving mostly Afghans who obtained Indian passports under false pretences to spirit hopeful migrants to Europe.

The CBI today said it had arrested three people and recovered 277 passports issued by passport officials in New Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Jalandhar, Guwahati and Bhopal.

It also seized around 3,000 photographs, three visa stickers of a European country and fake bank passbooks.
