NEW DELHI, FEB. 8. The Delhi police have registered a case against the South Delhi-based VIMHANS Hospital for wrongful confinement and causing grievous hurt endangering the life of a female patient. The family of 43-year-old Munni Barthwal has also alleged that due to the doctors' negligence and delay in treatment, her right forearm had to be amputated. This morning, the Srinivaspuri police visited VIMHANS and got Ms. Barthwal, a Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher at Lansdowne in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttaranchal, shifted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). A medical board at AIIMS has also been set up to investigate the matter, while the police are looking into the case of illegal confinement. In the FIR, the patient's husband, Suman Barthwal, has alleged that his wife was admitted to VIMHANS on November 30 for spinal cord related problem. But soon after her admission the doctors administered an injection through drip in her right hand that led to complications and the hand began to swell. Though the doctors claimed that she would recover soon, but later said that her right forearm had to be amputated in order to save her life. Ms. Barthwal's forearm was amputated on December 20. Though gradually the forearm wound healed, but even after the passage of over two months the patient showed no signs of recovery from her spinal cord problem. As Ms. Barthwal's condition deteriorated, her husband decided to shift her to some speciality hospital. But the hospital allegedly refused to let her go till bills amounting to around Rs.4 lakhs were cleared. On February 7, they also allegedly forced him to write a letter stating that he had no compliant against the hospital, a mention of which was later made in the FIR.
