Erode
By Our Staff Reporter
ERODE, FEB.9. The municipal officials today disconnected the cable lines of five operators for their failure in remitting the entertainment tax arrears to the Municipality amid police protection. Some days ago, the Erode Municipal Commissioner, Jayaraman, issued notices to 60 cable operators of Erode town to remit their entertainment tax of Rs. 80 lakhs to the municipality, failing which he warned that their cable lines would be disconnected. Following this, some cable operators paid portion of the arrears. Meanwhile, the Commissioner gave an ultimatum to the cable operators to remit the tax till 4 p.m. today. He said in Erode town alone, 17,000 and odd connections had been provided by the cable operators and they were collecting Rs. 100 to Rs. 175 per connection. Of this they had to pay Rs. 15 per connection as entertainment tax to the municipality. But all the cable operators were in the defaulters' list and so stringent action had been taken today.
