HYDERABAD, FEB. 9. Varsham, Shankardada MBBS, Arya, Anand, Malleswari, Mass and other blockbuster Telugu hits are expected to vie for the first overseas `Box Office Film Awards' to be organised by `Telugu Times', a United States-based fortnightly global Telugu newspaper. A grand entertainment event will be held for the film awards function to be hosted by the Bay Area Telugu Association at the Sunny wale Temple auditorium in San Francisco on Ugadi (April 9). The publication has tied up with Gemini Television for telecast of the programme here on a Sunday evening in April or May this year. Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, C.V. Subba Row, Managing Director and Editor, `Telugu Times', said the awards function was being organised to celebrate the publication's first anniversary and it was proposed to make the event an annual affair.
Short-listing through ballot
Films released last year between January and December were eligible for the awards and some of the films would be short-listed through a ballot published in the February and March issues of `Telugu Times'. Public opinion would also be gathered on its website: www.telugu-times.com. "The movies and film personalities eligible for the awards will be finalised and presented based on the ballot results," he said.
Song and dance contest
Invitations would be extended to film stars and other personalities of the selected movies and they would also be taken to the US. The response from the film industry was quite encouraging, he said. `Telugu Times' printed at San Francisco and distributed throughout the United States would also be holding `Pratibha Lahiri', singing and dance competitions for Telugu youngsters. "It is like a talent search for children and youth following Telugu culture and tradition," he said. Competitions would be held across five cities with the respective Telugu Associations hosting the event: San Francisco (April 9), Detroit 9 (April 16), Washington DC (April 23), Philadelphia (April 30) and another city was yet to be finalised. The contest would be in four categories of classical, folk, film, and pop for the age groups of 5-10 years, 11-16 years and 17-22 years.
