MADIKERI, FEB. 9. M.C. Nanaiah, former Minister, on Wednesday called upon the youth to shun casteism and guard against the divisive forces that were attempting to destroy the unity and integrity of the country. Mr. Nanaiah was addressing Cubs and Bulbuls at Man's Compound here during the valedictory of the five-day 28th State-level Cubs and Bulbuls Festival. He echoed the late Kuvempu in asking Cubs and Bulbuls to become "vishwamanava". He decried the efforts made by certain forces in the country to organise public functions in the name of religion. The former Minister called upon the intelligentsia to come out against such tendencies. The Scouts and Guides movement, founded by Lord Baden Powell in England in 1907, has become a formidable youth force. Other youth movements such as the National Cadet Corps and the National Service Scheme have come a long way since their launch. These movements aim at fostering unity and instilling a sense of patriotism among the youth, Mr. Nanaiah said. He said the festival is a good opportunity for over 2,000 Cubs and Bulbuls to get an exposure to new ideas and environs. Mr. Nanaiah released Kusumanjali-Chaitanya Chilume, a souvenir brought out on the occasion. Sri Shantamallikarjuna Swamy of Arameri Kalancheri Mutt blessed the Cubs and Bulbuls on the occasion. The Deputy Commissioner, Srikant Valagad, who is the president of the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Kodagu, gave an account of the festival. Kondajji B.Shanmukhappa, Chief Commissioner, Karnataka Scouts and Guides, welcomed the gathering. Meenakshi Poonacha, Commissioner, Scouts and Guides, Kodagu, proposed a vote of thanks.
