Thrissur emerges champion in VHSS youth fete

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 9. Thrissur region has bagged the overall championship at the eighth Vocational Higher Secondary School youth festival that concluded here today.

Thrissur region scored 404 points. Kollam zone was at second place with 388 points, while Vadakara region was third with 351 points.

Sarith Nath of Government VHSS, Aranmula, was adjudged the `Kalaprathibha' with an individual tally of 62 points. G. Malavika of Victory VHSS, Nemom, was declared the `Kalathilakam'. She had 47 points to her credit.

While Sarith impressed the crowd and the judges with his performances in Ottanthullal and Kathakali music, Malavika held the audience spellbound with her portrayal of a mother who lost her child to the tsunami, in the fancy dress competition. Malavika walked away with the first prize in this competition and with it the Kalathilakam title.

About 2,000 student-artists from 375 vocational higher secondary schools spread over seven `regions' in the State pitted their wits and talents against each other during the three-day festival. At times the parents and teachers accompanying the participants seemed more caught up in the competitive spirit than the students themselves. The festival also witnessed its share of arguments among parents and teachers about certain decisions of the judges.

First prize-winners in some of the competitions held on the concluding day of the youth festival:

Mono Act: Petreeshya C.T., Government Mappila VHSS, Koilandi.

Guitar: K. Jeroy, Government VHSS, Koduvally.

Poorakkali: Vipeesh T.V, C.H. Mohammad Koya Smaraka Government VHSS, Kottappuram.

Violin (Western): Nithin C, Government VHSS, Kalpakanchery.

Violin (Eastern): Jaseem A.R, Government City VHSS, Thiruvananthapuram.

Chenda (Thayambaka): Ratheesh K.V, Government VHSS, Kayyur.

Parichamuttukali: Rahul R. Kurup, SNVVHSS, Aloor.

Mimicry: Bivin Abraham, Government VHSS, Thamarassery.

Elocution (Malayalam): Abu Tahir C.K., MJ VHSS, Velliyappally.

Kolkali: Muhammad Faris, KTV Government Mappila VHSS, Koilandi.

Nadodi Nritham (Male): Rahul Rajendran, TTTM VHSS, Vadasserikkara.

Kathakali Sangeetham (Female): Malavika G., Victory VHS, Nemom.

Kathakali Sangeetham (Male): Sarith Nath, Government VHSS, Aranmula.

Sangha Nritham: Renju R., Naduvattom VHSS, Pallippad.

Oppana: Fathima Jusna, Calicut Girl's VHSS, Vadakara.

Daff Mutt: Muhammad Sahd M.J., MMVHSS, Kozhikode.

Padyaparayanam (Malayalam): Lakshmi R. Nair, Vandematharam VHSS, Veliyannur.
