HAMPI, FEB. 9. A musical tribute was paid to Sri Purandaradasa, the poet-saint of the 16th Century and father of Carnatic music, at the 441st aradhana held here on Tuesday. Musicians of national and international repute, including M.S. Sheela, Nagavalli Nagaraj, Vinayak Toravi, Anant Terdal, and Hussain Sab, participated in the aradhana that lasted for over 14 hours. Mattihalli Nagaraja Rao, veteran journalist, who was the chief guest at the inaugural function, urged the Government to organise the Sri Purandaradasa aradhana at the "Purandanra mantap" situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra at Hampi. The aradhana was organised by the Aradhana Samiti in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture at the Virupaksha temple. Mr. Rao pointed out that the aradhana should be held on the lines of Tyagaraja aradhana, which is held regularly at Tiruvayur in Tamil Nadu. He also appealed to the State government to include the aradhana in the Budget to ensure release of adequate funds. He pointed out that the mantap was in a dire state of neglect. There was no proper pathway to reach the mantap. He urged the authorities concerned to take steps to protect the mantap's sanctity. Karigouda Beechanahalli, Registrar of Kannada University, inaugurated the programme. He said that devotion and spirituality were essential to lead a harmonious life. He said that "dasa sahitya" was most relevant in this regard. A.V. Navada, head of the Purandara Adhyayana Peetha, Kannada University, delivered a special lecture on the life and works of the poet-saint. He underlined the need for constructing a "Purandara bhavan" near Hampi. L.K. Revanakar, Assistant Commissioner, Hindu Religious Endowment, presided over the function. S.H. Shivarudrappa, Assistant Director, Department of Kannada and Culture, welcomed the gathering. Chandrashekar Davanagere, executive officer, Virupaksha Temple, proposed a vote of thanks.
