Do not to yield to pressure from naxals, Govt. urged

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, FEB. 9. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarti Parishad (ABVP) has urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, not to give in to pressure from intellectuals and to deal with naxalites with an iron hand.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, N. Ravikumar, State organising secretary of the ABVP, said that the naxalites' activities are in violation of the democratic principles, and those involved in the movement are against the judiciary and the law. The State Government should not agree to hold talks with naxalites and those who support the movement.

Mr. Ravikumar stressed that the Government should deal with the naxal problem by deploying the special task force in areas where naxalites are present.

Support

Stating that those killed in the recent police encounter were not innocent, he said that the police should not be made a scapegoat.

Instead, the Government should be supported to help wipe out naxal activities in the State.

Mr. Ravikumar came down heavily on those supporting the naxal and other extremist movements and urged the Government to initiate action against them by withdrawing their citizenship and rights.

He said that regional imbalance and under-development did exist in Chikmagalur district.

"ABVP has surveyed the area and has submitted its report. We have urged the Government to take steps in the matter. The Government should invite the elected representatives of the area for talks and chalk out plans," he said.
