NEW DELHI, FEB. 9. The Congress leader, Girija Vyas, has been appointed chairperson of the National Commission for Women. She replaces Poornima Advani, who completed her tenure on January 24. Ms. Vyas' appointment was cleared by the Human Resource Development Ministry and an official announcement will be made shortly. She will hold the rank of Cabinet Minister. Head of the media unit in the All-India Congress Committee, Ms. Vyas has served as president of the Rajasthan Congress Committee. She represented the Udaipur Parliamentary constituency in Rajasthan several times but lost the last Lok Sabha elections from there. In another development, Rajni Patil, social worker, has been appointed chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. She replaces Mridula Sinha who demitted office in November last. Her tenure will be for three years from the date she takes charge, an HRD Ministry official said today. Ms. Patil was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from the Beed parliamentary constituency of Maharashtra. Born in 1958, her grandfather, H. Vishnu Ganesh Pingle, was founder member of the `Gadar' movement. He was hanged in Lahore in 1915 by the British Government. Ms. Patil, wife of Ashok Patil, former Maharashtra Minister, has been actively engaged in social activities related to women and children. She is the founder-secretary of Mauli Vidyapeeth, an organisation working for rural children. She was member of the Senate of Pune University from 1979 to 1980, member of the parliamentary committee on External Affairs and Finance from 1996 to 1998 and president of the Maharashtra Mahila Congress in 1998.
