High Court questions police, MCD over cattle menace

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 9. The Delhi High Court today issued notices to the Delhi police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) asking them to explain the goring to death of two persons, including a woman, by a stray bull at Preet Vihar in East Delhi last week.

Taking suo motu notice of the incident, a Division Bench comprising Justice B.C. Patel and Justice S.K. Kaul directed the two respondents to tell the Court on March 2 what they had done to address the menace of stray cattle in the Capital.

Disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Common Cause, a non-governmental organisation on the menace of stray cattle in the city, the High Court had last year directed the local body and the city police to effectively deal with the problem within a time frame.

The stray bull had run amok and killed an elderly man and the woman early morning on that day. Sixty-five-year-old Chanan Ram was on his way back home after morning walk when he was attacked by the stray bull outside his house near Baldev Park in the area.

Later, it attacked 35-year-old domestic help, Ramajjo, who was going for work in same locality.
