`Encroachments on public property not to be allowed'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 9. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, reiterated in the Assembly today that no one would be allowed to encroach upon public property at Kovalam.

Winding up the general discussion on the Budget, the Chief Minister said that it was the CPI(M)-led City Corporation, which had given licence to the Green Cove hotel there. If the hotel had violated the licensing provisions, it could have taken legal action. Instead the party had resorted to violence. This would not be countenanced. Strong action would be taken against those who resorted to violence.

Similarly, any unauthorised construction by the Kovalam Hotels would not be permitted. However, maintenance work would be permitted.

Scientific evidence

Mr. Chandy said that there was scientific evidence that the brother of the victim of the Kottiyam sex scandal had murdered her. This was in addition to his confession. However, he took the representation of the Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, in the matter seriously and would forward the video and other material submitted by Mr. Achuthanandan to the investigating officers.

He said that 20 of the 24 accused in the sex scandal had been arrested. The four persons who were absconding were not persons with any influence.
