Minister's condition remains serious

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 9. The neuro surgery experts from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), who examined the Minister for Local Self-Government, Kutty Ahmedkutty at the Medical College hospital (MCH), have ruled out the need for shifting the patient to any specialist centre.

Mr. Ahmedkutty's condition remains serious yet stable. He is breathing normally now and is not on any support system.

V. S. Mehta of AIIMS and B. A.Chandramouli of NIMHANS, who had detailed discussions with the medical team at MCH, expressed satisfaction over the treatment being given to the Minister now.

They have ruled out the need for any acute intervention at this stage.

The Minister had been admitted to MCH with critical injuries sustained in a car accident on Monday.

The doctors also discussed the situation with the Minister's family. The Health Minister, K. K. Ramachandran, the PWD Minister, M. K. Muneer, the Industries Minister, Ebrahimkutty and Nalakathu Sooppy, MLA, were also present.

Surgical management of the patient would be impossible till the bone injuries, skin wounds and contusions heal, which would be anywhere from three to six weeks.

However, MCH sources said that it was too early to rule out the possibilities of complications as the patient was diabetic.

"There is a good chance of infection setting in at some stage though diabetes is under control now. The patient has been put on strong antibiotics and there is also a proposal to keep him in isolation in a separate ICU," a senior doctor at MCH said.

Respiratory physiotherapy has been suggested for him after 48 hours, to improve lung function, doctors said.
