Appalling

Sir, — The attack on the Delhi University lecturer, S.A.R. Geelani, is appalling. Surely, the incident is a sad commentary on how democratic traditions are ignored and trampled upon.

The Supreme Court's order to the police to submit a progress report on the incident within a week is appropriate.

K.S. Thampi,
Chennai

Sir, — The attack on Mr. Geelani should be seen as an attempt to silence the voice of democracy.

Udaya S. Mishra,
Thiruvananthapuram
